Everybody wants WIFI. Gone are the days when you had to "plug in" to the wall just to check your email. These days most customers expect it. Whether it be in a restaurant, at the ball game, or when staying at a hotel on vacation. I know I have personally canceled my reservation more than once upon arriving at a hotel to discover the establishment only offers high-speed Internet in the lobby or common area. What are we in the Dark Ages?
Today's business environment, especially in the service and retail sectors dictates that you offer your customers wireless connectivity. The common rebuttal I often hear to this is "That’s what cellular is for". I'm going to let you in on a dirty little secret Cellular Services Providers don’t want you to know. It’s called mobile data offloading (more info on that HERE). Have you ever noticed, by default no less, that the little pocket-sized supercomputer (by 1950s standards) you carry around is set to automatically use and even prefer WIFI over Cellular connections? There’s a reason for this. Cellular networks cannot handle all of the data, especially when their network is congested and/or you have a poor cell signal. Mobile offload allows users to experience the performance they expect and it's estimated that sixty percent of all data usage is offloaded to local WIFI networks. That's a lot of ones and zeros.
There is no environment where this is more prevalent than large-scale sports venues (NFL/MLB/NCAA) - Cellular Providers often subsidize the costs associated with installing next-gen WIFI networks in these spaces in order to have the opportunity to offload user traffic using dedicated SSIDs (What is an SSID?).
So how does this affect you or your business? Remember earlier when I stated I would leave a hotel if the wireless wasn’t up to par? It happens all the time - you as the business owner just don’t know it.
Customers won’t normally tell you they're not returning to your establishment because, in essence, you did nothing wrong - your product or service was exceptional - you just fell short on an amenity that most people take for granted these days. And given the choice, customers will gravitate towards businesses that fulfill the majority of their needs - even if they don’t consciously know it. Imagine a customer, we'll call him Bob, going car shopping and seeing that brand new shiny truck he's always wanted. Bob looks at the make, model, options, and sticker price, then decides to compare shop by flipping open his phone and..... nothing. No service, and poor signal. Bob gets frustrated and walks off the lot because he cannot make an informed decision on his purchase and rather than risk overpaying, he leaves. That car dealership potentially lost thousands of dollars in revenue through no fault of its own other than not realizing and addressing its customer’s needs. And we all know, Bob on his way home stopped at another dealership (that happened to have WIFI) and bought a truck.
