A few weeks ago, my wife asked me to pick up one of our sons from a birthday party his classmate was having. It was a gorgeous day and when I got there all of the kids were swimming in their backyard pool. While waiting for my son to exit the pool and get dressed I did what any normal parent does - I engaged in small talk with the parents, "You have a nice yard, beautiful home", etc. While my son was taking his sweet time extracting himself from the pool and getting dressed as most kids do.
I learned through the course of our conversation that they were planning on adding an outdoor bar to go along with the cabana that was already in place. The husband (we'll call him Joe), was really excited about the project and mentioned that he was planning on having a few large screen tv's put in so he and his friends could watch the big game while they entertained. Now keep in mind I just met these people, but given my background, I half blurted out - "How are you going to hook them up?". Joe kind of looked at me a little funny and then it dawned on him. He never really thought about what it would take to actually accomplish what he wanted to do - the cabana was built when the pool went in, he had all the power he needed in the world but no infrastructure for cable or data services.
I pointed out that installing physical cabling at this point would be almost impossible considering the pool was situated between the house and cabana (with a beautiful stained and stamped concrete patio surrounding the entire thing), and that the existing electric was most likely buried and under the patio. I asked him if he ever thought about going wireless (*WARNING - gratuitous sales pitch*), and using a mesh or PTP link (more info on that HERE) to provide cable tv service from his house out to the bar and cabana, with the added benefit of Internet access as well.
I also might have mentioned it’s what I did for a living and explained to Joe that all of his issues could be solved in a day or two with relatively little investment. By that time my son was ready to go, so I left Joe with my business card and told him if he was interested in a possible wireless solution to get in touch with me and we could go over it in more detail.
Outdoor wireless is more ubiquitous than ever and can be applied in various ways to solve a myriad of problems. From access to connectivity - it is a versatile technology and in Joe’s case would serve his needs well given his current situation and what he’s trying to achieve.
At Nova, the tail end of our mission statement is "...to provide our customers with cost effective technology solutions that enhance their everyday lives", and I think this interaction is a good example of that.
